PLEASE REFER TO WALKING CATEGORIES PAGE FOR DEFINITIONS OF A DIFFICULT WALK CATEGORY & FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE DOING AN ADVENTURE LIKE THIS ESPECIALLY IF ALONE OR WITH YOUNGSTERS.

A few thoughts if trekking alone...

  • Discover fine views of Mont Blanc Massif mountains from the Swiss side from Col Chevaux in Switzerland and at Col Mille above Liddes.

  • Beware of landslides on the walk up to Bourg St Pierre from Liddes because on the right side of the river the paths are now closed and an alternative goes to the left side of the river up across a river to a farm, a chapel & a hotel to reach the village of Bourg St Pierre.

  • Enjoy biodiversity extraordinaire - alpine flowers in Valley Entremont & Valley Valsorey in Switzerland - not far from Bourg St Pierre village.

  • See geology in Combe de L'A area above and between Liddes & La Fouly in Switzerland.

  • Spy mountain animals (ibex families and bouquetin) in Italian Cols section near Rifugio Frassati, Italy.

  • Walk through Col Saint Bernard from Switzerland into Italy and continue on to Col Remy, Col Ceingles, Col Malatrait on the way to Rifuio Bonatti mountain hut which is very close to the Mont Blanc itself and Courmayeur on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc. See the Mont Blanc when descending from Col Malatrait to Rifugio Bonatti.

  • Enjoy the beautiful Bonatti balcony walk in front of Rifugio Bonatti with the Mont Blanc mountains in front of your nose

  • Go from Italy into Switzerland via Col Grand Ferret (it can be foggy & no visibility so stay away from the very dangerous edges) and then hike down to spectacular La Fouly from the top of the mountain (Col Grand Ferret) to see the glaciers and the beautiful scenery in Val Ferret (Swiss side) and aim to arrive by 7pm for the only supermarket in the area.

Or...BE MY GUEST...and book on to a guided Tour Saint Bernard trek for a 7 day walk with a trekking guide to see the highlights of the Saint Bernard Tour and sleep in alpine mountain huts in Switzerland & Italy along the way. Or book the Tour Mont Blanc which goes around the Mont Banc mountain through France, Italy & Switzerland (9 or 12 days).

Rifugio Frassati. ITALY - Pay in Euros. 3 course dinner provided. Hot shower possible. Bunkbed accommodation in mountain dormitories.

RIFUGIO FRASSATI - Delicious Italian Ratatouille!!!

DAY 7: Walk to Col Malatrait going up steep valley side until you reach the blue rope and metal ladder steps and then head to the right. When I was there, a snow patch remained on the left side and looked more intimidating than it actually was from far below, the angle is not so steep when stood next to it but if icy crampons would be useful as the scree slope to the right of it can be slippy underfoot when very wet conditions prevail.

A FEW TREKKERS COMING UP THE SCREE SLOPE TO COL MALATRAIT. THE ROCKY TOP SECTION OF COL MALATRAIT HAS A ROPE AND A FEW METALS STEPS. SOME PEOPLE TAKE THE SNOW SLOPE UP/DOWN THE SIDE WHEN FROZEN WITH CRAMPONS ON IF THE ROCKS ARE ICY OR NOT VISIBLE.

IT TURNS OUT IT IS FAR EASIER THAN IT LOOKS FROM BELOW IN THE BOWL, BUT THERE IS A DROP DOWN THE MOUNTAIN IF YOU SLIP OFF OR LOOSE YOUR FOOTING SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL.

COL MALATRAIT

Descend from Col Malatrait to Refuge Bonatti for lunch - delicious baked aubergine (pay in Euros).
